Marois wins seat in Quebec

I imagine this is no surprise. The margin certainly is quite significant. The Liberals not running a candidate did not help obviously. The ADQ is relatively conservative I understand.

Quebec separatist leader wins legislature seat

MONTREAL, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Pauline Marois, leader of the separatist Parti Quebecois, has easily won a seat in the French-speaking province's legislature in an election to fill a vacant seat.

Marois, a former Quebec finance minister who took over as leader of Parti Quebecois in June, won 59 percent of the popular vote, well ahead of the candidate for the official opposition Action Democratique du Quebec, who garned 37 percent.

The pro-Canadian unity Liberals, who form a minority government in Quebec City, did not field a candidate in the election in the Charlevoix district, which flanks the St. Lawrence River northeast of Quebec City.

Marois told supporters her goal was sovereignty and solidarity. Quebec voted against separation from Canada in referendums held in 1995 and 1980.

Marois said she was concerned about the crisis in the region's forestry sector, which has been hard hit by falling lumber prices.

She expects to have a complete party platform ready by next spring, when the Liberal government could face a no-confidence vote from the opposition parties on their 2008/09 budget.
